The Active Birth Evacuation System
One of the questions we are often asked is,
“How do we get a woman out of the pool if she collapses?”

Naturally our instinct would be to just get hold
of the woman and pull her out of the pool.

However, this falls foul of European Community
directives on manual handling that state, the
maximum weight lifted should be no more then 25kg.

We all know if a woman is monitored properly there
is virtually no chance she will become so weak that
she collapses.

In our 23 years experience of designing and
supplying birthpools to the NHS we have never
heard of an account where this has happened.

However, as the health & safety coordinators
rightfully point out, “What if she does?”

Protocols need to be in place to answer
this question and enable midwives to
safely evacuate a woman from the pool
and adhere to EC regulations.

To help resolve this problem we have met
with leading emergency equipment consultants to
design an evacuation system specific to the needs of midwives
attending water births
