The problem with normal beanbags, birthing loungers and mats is:

  1. They are designed for sitting and lounging on. As a result they are far too low for woman to lean on in the upright postures which are ideal for labour and birth.
  2. They are covered in fabric, normally cotton which is impossible to clean and disinfect.
  3. They have seams which, even if the fabric is waterproof, allow water to seep in and bacteria to become lodged in the fabric.

We have resolved these problems by:

  1. Making the Active Birth Beanbag 20cm higher then normal beanbags enabling the labouring woman to be more upright to encourage a normal physiological labour to unfold.
  2. Covering the Active Birth Beanbag and Mat in a fabric specially developed for medical applications which is pleasing to the touch, fluid-proof, breathable, latex free, BS 5852 compliant and easy to clean in situ with antiseptic, non-alcohol based, wipes or solutions.
  3. Fully sealing the seams of the beanbag with waterproof seam sealing tape and high frequency welding the seams of the mat.

in a High Performance 4-way Stretch Fabric Specially
Developed for Medical Applications

   The fabric is:

  • Anti-bacterial/Anti-fungal: will not support microbial or fungal growth including Salmonella, E Coli and MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).
  • Waterproof: Water or oil based solutions will not penetrate or absorb into the fabric. Hydrostatic Head BS3424 > 1 metre
  • Breathable: Moisture vapour permeable BS5852
  • Colourfast to Sunlight: Grade 6/7 on the Blue scale - Martindale Abrasion: End point > 40,000 No pilling
  • Tear Strength: BS4303 Severe Contract Grade
  • Tensile Strength: BS2576 1972 Severe Contract Grade
  • Urea Resistance: BS4324 part 19. No deterioration after 24 hours, 5.5ph, 8.8ph Urea soak
  • Easy to Maintain: Extremely Stain Resistant. Spillages can be easily removed using a damp sponge or cloth and wiping dry.
  • Flame Retardant: BS5852 Crib 5
  • Stain Resistant: Excellent stain removal has been observed for blood, urine, grease, ink, coffee, iodine, betadine, ketchup, chewing gum, chocolate, grape juice.
  • 100% Polyester impregnated and multi-coated with aqueous based microporous polymers

Technical Details

   The beanbag is constructed of two beanbags covers (an inner and an outer). A normal cotton fabric beanbag inner liner is encased in a high performance medical grade fabric cover. The inner liner gives the beanbag strength and shape, whilst the outer cover is waterproof and disinfectable.

To ensure that infection control standards are easily
met and maintained the Active Birth Beanbag is
supplied with disposable covers

    Fabric covers (such as ours) may be suitable for cleaning and disinfecting. However due to the nature of soft furnishings it is virtually impossible to guarantee that every square centimetre of fabric will be 100% cleaned and disinfected.

   In addition regular cleaning and disinfecting of these items is laborious and expensive. To save time and guarantee that standards are reliably met disposable covers are the answer.

   The covers are made from 100% Spun bonded 40 gm white polyproplyene non-woven fabric. The non-slip fabric is and soft and warm to the touch.They are supplied packed in individual plastic sleeves in boxes of 50.

  

    “The NCT wants to encourage maternity units to make improvements to the labour room environment to ensure women have a positive birth experience. Significant improvements can be made to labour rooms at little or no cost.

   For instance, beds can be moved to the side of the room to give women more space to move around. All women should have sufficient pillows, and use of floor mats, a birth ball and bean bags.

   When maternity units are being rebuilt or refurbished, women’s priorities should be central to the design. Top priorities should include en suite toilets, controllable heating and lighting and sufficient birth pools.”
