New Active Birth Pool

This breakthrough ergonomic design provides
unparalleled comfort, support and safety

The New Active Birth Pool 's form is based on organic shapes. This makes the pool more approachable psychologically and helps the mother to be more relaxed in the hospital environment.

The mother has freedom of movement. She is supported in the positions natural to labour and birth.

She can float freely, uses the curves to relax in, the grab rails to assist squatting, and the seat for resting and welcoming the baby.

One of the primary problems midwives experience when attending a water birth is lower back pain. This is caused from leaning over the pool or sitting by the pool with legs apart.

We carefully looked at the dynamics at play and realised that a major part of the problem was the distance between the midwife and the mother. The pool itself was the main obstacle.

To solve this problem we designed the New Active Birth and Deluxe Water Birth Pools without a surround.

The free standing - open design allows the midwife to work closely - with her legs under the rim. Reports from midwives using the pools has been highly favourable.

A key issue for midwives revolves around what happens if a women is incapacitated and needs to be removed from the pool.

      There are 2 critical issues:

   1) The safety of the women

   2) Manual handling practicalities and regulations.

First, Women using the pools should be carefully screened for contra-indications.

If she is not having a normal - physiological labour - she shouldn’t be in the pool. Careful monitoring will virtually eliminate the possibility of a woman collapsing in the pool,

      What if she does?

Second, She will need to be safely lifted out of the pool and placed on a trolley. Manual handling regulations forbid midwives from lifting heavy loads.

Here's how we solved the problem...

In this situation time is of the essence. The pool cannot be emptied instantly. A hoist cannot be moved into position, lowered and utilised within the required time.

The answer -- is a raised seat at water level. I call this the safety seat.

The women can be raised up gently through the water - along the sloping sidewall onto the seat. The buoyancy of the water supports the women -- lightening the load.

Once on the seat she is safe. She can be manoeuvred onto a trolley and cared for.

The seat is ideal for internal examinations and monitoring. Midwives can easily attend the labouring woman without her having to leave the pool.

It’s also been used as a birth seat.

Most women are able to enter and leave the pool by sitting on the rim and swivelling their legs over into the water. Others simply step over the rim and into the pool.

The New Active Birth Pool is fabricated from a high impact weatherable ABS plastic. After thoroughly researching all the materials available we chose this one rather than GRP fibreglass because it’s harder surface is less brittle.

It’s more resistant to bacteria and not affected by the repeated use of sterilising agents. The material has a lightly textured, slip resistant internal finish and a smooth, clean external finish. The pool is mounted on a steel frame with adjustable feet and anchor points.

The pool is supplied fitted with a full length skirting panel. This wrap around panel closely follows the shape and contours of the pool and does not sacrifice the ergonomic design in any way. The panel greatly improves the appearance of the pool as well as making it easier to clean and maintain.

As the panels will be factory fitted installation will be easier and less costly. The pool needs no building in. It will need to be secured to the floor. There are anchor points on the steel frame for bolting the pool to the floor.

The New Active Birth Pool is fitted with a 2" low profile drain to empty the pool quickly and lower the overall height.

Improvement to New Active Birth Pool

In response to requests from infection control specialists, architects and midwives we have developed a cowling to encase the drainage system on the NewActive Birth Pool.

The cowling enhances the appearance of the pools, improves hygiene and makes cleaning easier.

All New Active Birth Pools will be supplied with the cowling as standard equipment from July 1, 2008.

The price of the pool has risen by a small amount to cover the production and development costs of the cowling.

Installation Guidelines
New Active Birth Pool

As the pool is fitted with a full length wrap around skirting it needs no building in. The pool is mounted on a steel frame with adjustable feet and anchor points for bolting the pool to the floor. Once the pool is in place you can drop the skirting panel onto the floor and seal it in with silicone.

Please do not remove the packing until you’re ready
to use the pool as this will help protect the pool during installation

  1. Place the pool on the intended site.
  2. Place two pieces of timber of equal thickness across the pool (on the lower level of the flange for Active Birth Pool).
  3. Lay a spirit level onto the timber both side to side and length ways so that the pool is level from side to side, but has a 20 mm fall towards the tap end.
  4. This can be achieved by placing a spacer under the tap end of the spirit level and then adjusting the feet.
  5. The fall should be adjusted first ensuring the timber is pushed down onto the flange.
  6. Put a mark on the floor around the feet and a cross-under the 2 downward facing bolts near the 2 middle feet for Active Birth (diagonal feet for Deluxe).
  7. A hole can be drilled into the floor to either side of bolt [b] for a concrete fixing stud m10. insert and fix to floor.
  8. The pool can be repositioned onto the marks and the link plate should be swivelled round to link up to the stud, shim the link plate on the stud with washers so that there is only a slight downward pressure.
  9. The pool can now be plumbed in.
  10. Slit the top wrapping and remove the enclosed package.
  11. Test the pool after installation.
  12. Remove the packing from around the pool only. Remove the 3 m8 nuts from under the pool top flange, as you do this the skirt will descend covering the feet and fixings.
  13. Seal the skirting panel to the floor with silicone or similar sealant

Typical Installation of the New Active Birth Pool

The pool is fitted with a 2” drain designed to help lower it's overall height. The drain is located at the back of the pool.

It’s fixed at a slight angle off the horizontal and operated by a handle which controls a ball valve.

For installation the pipe work will need to be taken through the floor to the stack.

If it is not possible to install the pool in this way the pool can be raised for normal drainage connections to the wall behind the pool.

If you need the pool raised, we can help by mounting on 10 cm legs at no extra cost if you inform us when placing your order.

A set of thermostatically controlled 3/4” bath shower mixer taps can be mounted on the wall approximately 15 cm above the rim of the pool.

The taps should have as long a spout as possible to help prevent splashing. If you want to mount the taps on the rim - the rim should be strengthened with a plate underneath the section where the taps will be mounted.

The pool is usually filled to a depth of 22" (55 cm). This exerts a pressure of 95 lbs (43k) per square foot upon the floor of the pool.

The New Active Birth Pool weighs approximately 2200 lbs (1,000k) and the Deluxe Pool 1950lbs (886k) when filled to a depth of 22" (55 cm).

The pool’s frame has four legs with adjustable feet. If necessary the frame/base of the pool can be packed with wood or other suitable material to spread the load across the floor more evenly.

If the pool room is not ready for use after installation is complete the pool should be resealed with the enclosed packaging to help protect it and keep it clean

Cleaning Guidelines

The pools are fabricated from a high impact weatherable ABS plastic. We have carefully chosen this material rather than GRP fibreglass for the shell. Because it’s harder surface is less brittle.

It’s more resistant to bacteria and not affected by the repeated use of sterilising agents. The material has a lightly textured, slip resistant internal finish and a smooth, clean external finish.

  • Before filling the pool rinse it out with cold water and run the taps for two minutes.
  • After use the pool must be cleaned with warm water and a non-abrasive detergent.
  • Disinfect the pool using either 24 x 0.5 gms or 5 x 2.5 gms Presept Tabs to 3 x 10 lt.. buckets of water.
  • Alternatively fill the pool and add presept tabs to the same strength as above.
  • Both of these methods will provide a solution of 1000ppm Sodium Dichloroisocy.
  • Leave solutions in the pool for 10 minutes ensuring all surfaces are wiped over
  • The drainage outlet should be paid particular attention and cleaned with a disposable cloth.
  • The pool should then be emptied of the solution and rinsed with cold water and dried.
  • The drainage outlet pipe should be kept closed when not in use.
  • The pool should be cleaned daily with warm water and a non-abrasive detergent.
